Give the gift of fitness for the holidays!

Have a friend or family member on your gift list that is difficult to buy for? How about a fitness kit? You can buy an exercise band, yoga mat or fitness ball and include your favorite video/DVD or book. (I suggest browsing collagevideo.com). Or how about a basket full of golf or tennis balls to encourage your loved one to continue to be active in the sport they love. Maybe a gift certificate to a batting cage, YMCA, fitness class or session with a personal trainer? A day pass to an indoor water park for the entire family? Instead of candy, gooey food and gift certificates to restaurants with menus full of unhealthy meals, give the gift that REALLY shows you care! (And you can put these kinds of things on YOUR wish list!)

Let’s talk turkey!

Turkey is great year round, not just at Thanksgiving! Serving turkey usually means great leftover meat we can store in the freezer to use in healthy casseroles and dishes that will be especially appreciated during our busy times of the year. The National Turkey Federation advises that leftover turkey should be carved from the bone and stuffing should be removed. All leftovers should be stored in shallow containers or zipper-seal freezer bags and refrigerated or frozen within two hours of cooking. Refrigerated turkey should last three or four days, but frozen turkey can last three or four months.

Lift weight to lose weight!

The benefits of lifting weights are endless; you can’t afford to waste another day! Resistance training raises your metabolism because muscle burns more calories than fat burns. It can also help target your weight loss, because when your body is building muscle in a particular area, blood flow automatically increases to that area. When blood flow to an area increases, so does the rate at which fat is burned in that area! Weight training can also help you sculpt the “trouble areas” of your body, and you can lose inches, look firmer and feel great. Weight lifting also helps you fight osteoporosis and slows down the aging process.

So get started with what you already know and resources you already have (you know, those dusty dumbbells in your basement/garage!). Consult a book or video (www.collagevideo.com). If you’d like professional hands-on guidance, hire a personal trainer to come to your house even just one time. Also don’t forget the value of family and friends. Sometimes asking a brother, sister, friend (or even husband!) that has “some basic knowledge” in lifting weights can certainly help you get started.

Need to gain weight? Do it the healthy way.

Yes . . . believe it or not, some people have just as big of a challenge in keeping weight on or gaining weight as the rest of us have in trying take it off and keep it off. There are a variety of healthy ways to gain weight; however, I have two tactics that I continually suggest when asked this question, and it works EVERY TIME.

  1. Drink 100% juice all throughout the day, and

  2. Snack on nuts (all kinds) all throughout the day.
Do both of these in addition to the healthy meals and snacks you’re already eating and I guarantee that you will gain weight every time.

Conversely, for the rest of us who DON’T want to gain weight, we need to go easy on the nuts (I only allow myself one handful a day) and drink just 4 ounces of juice each day. In fact, I enjoy my juice 2 ounces at a time, diluted in lots of ice and water for two great tasting “fruit water” drinks throughout the day.
